FULL DAY PLASTIC RECYCLING WORKSHOP FAQS

What will I be making on the day?

Choose from a variety of homeware items to make and take home! A set of 8 coasters, a vase or candle holder, decorative board, irregular shaped blobby board, or 2 small trinket trays. Alternatively if you have any ideas which you'd like to run by us before the workshop, email your suggestions and we'll see if it's possible.

Please note: if you would like to take home your piece/s on the day, the products will have the natural edge from pressing or hand-shaping, as we do not have time to cut and sand the products straight after the workshop. Alternatively, we can cut & sand or carve your homeware pieces for an additional fee.

What is the structure of the day?

The day starts at 10am with a meet and greet, and an informal talk with videos and Q&A, and then a kneading and cutting demonstration for you to get a feel for working with the plastic.

After this, it’s time to choose the colours of recycled plastic that you’ll use to make your piece/s; we have prepared LDPE discs in a wide variety of colours, so there is plenty of choice! Once decided, we’ll take a 40 minute lunchbreak at around 12pm to give your plastic a chance to melt in our workshop ovens.

After lunch the plastic has melted, and we’ll begin exploring layering and marbling techniques. This process takes around 2 hours. When you’re happy with how the marbling looks within your plastic, we’ll either press your pieces or hand-shape them depending on the product type you are making.

When we’re all done (4-5pm depending on group size), if anyone wants to stick around for a chat, we’ll have various drink options waiting in the fridge, and we can raise a glass to all your hard work and wonderful creations!

    What are the safety precautions?

All materials and personal protective equipment will be provided, so just wear practical warm clothing and footwear (in the colder months) that you wouldn’t mind getting dirty, just in case.

We will run through the health and safety of each process before doing it to avoid accidents, and we will only let you do things that you are capable of doing. Anything you’re unable to do, we’ll do for you!

You will not be liable for accidental damage to equipment, except where damage has been caused as a result of recklessness or wilful negligence.

Can I park at the workshop?

We have some limited parking available in our mews - please email us before booking if parking is crucial! Alternatively there are excellent transport links just a one minute walk from our workshop.

    Do you provide refreshments?

Tea, coffee and water will be provided throughout the day, as well as some homemade snacks (vegan and gluten free) to keep you going through the afternoon.

There will be a 40 minute lunch break at around 12.30pm. We have a microwave and sofas if you want to bring lunch with you, alternatively there are some fab cafés just down the road, as well as supermarkets and other food shops on Western Road (1 minute walk).

    FAQS

How many participants can you host at once?

We can host up to 20 participants in one workshop, with each person making something to take home.

Do you have a shorter VERSION of YOUR REGULAR workshop?

Yes we do - we are able to run an abbreviated workshop with a minimum run time of 2 hours. We can be flexible and create a workshop which works for your particular group, incorporating different elements of our standard full day workshop.

When can you host the workshops?

We are open to discussing dates all year round, including weekends and evenings.

What can the participants make on the day?

Each participant can make 5 x coasters each, or 1 x small tray, with more products in the pipeline. Final outcome will be discussed prior to the workshop. For the festive period, the coasters can be turned into hanging ornaments.

How do you run workshops remotely?

We are able to bring ovens and equipment with us to host a workshop in your venue. We will run through the criteria and let you know what's possible by email.

What are the venue requirements FOR REMOTE WORKSHOPS?

A good power supply, ventilation (windows/doors) and tables to work on are essential. The venue will usually dictate what kind of workshop we can run in the space - please email us to find out more.
